M4 MacBook Pro reviews mostly endorsed my own view that, while the machine would make a great purchase for Intel MBP owners, there isn’t a compelling reason for any M-series user to upgrade.

Apple’s M-series MacBook Pro models have long been lauded for their stunning displays, using IPS LCD screens with miniLED backlighting. This tech provided impressive brightness, contrast, and local dimming, all contributing to an excellent viewing experience. The previous MacBook Pro models used a red KSF phosphor film to enable miniLED backlighting. While effective, this film had its limitations in terms of color accuracy and motion performance. Why Did Apple Wait?

The move to quantum dot technology hasn’t been a quick one. Display analyst Ross Young points out that Apple had good reasons for waiting. Earlier generations of quantum dots were inefficient, and more importantly, they often contained cadmium, a toxic substance that Apple has been careful to avoid. Cadmium is classified as a human carcinogen and poses significant risks, especially in electronic waste recycling.

Apple's previous decision to use KSF phosphor film instead of quantum dots was a precaution, as KSF is more efficient and free from cadmium. However, advancements in quantum dot technology have now made it possible for Apple to integrate this superior display tech without the environmental or health concerns associated with cadmium.

While the performance of the M4 MacBook Pro is the highlight for many users, the introduction of quantum dot technology to the display is a significant and often-overlooked upgrade.
